Spectacle blinds are typically used to join or permanently divide pipe networks. These steel plates feature two discs of a specific thickness, connected by a steel component resembling the nose piece of a pair of glasses. One disc is a solid plate, while the other is a ring with an interior diameter equal to a flange. Spectacle blinds are ideal for systems requiring frequent isolation and are often installed in the “open” position to allow pipe passage.
Spectacle spades and spacers, both part of the Line Blinds family, serve the same purpose as a simple valve or spectacle blind. The spade or spacer is positioned between two flanges and fastened with a bolt. A spectacle spacer is used when the line needs to be open, while a paddle blind or spade is fitted when it needs to be obstructed or closed. Conversion from open to closed requires removing only half of the bolts and switching out the Spade or Spacer.
Spade blinds are frequently used with a standalone spacer to avoid having to connect pipelines when a line is to be opened. These deployments are exclusively used to isolate flows. Standalone spade blinds are lighter than spectacles, making them ideal for extensive or intricate piping applications. Replacing a spade blind requires removing all flange bolts. The operator eliminates the spade blind entirely and substitutes it with a spacer of equal thickness to put the line back in service.
Each round is joined by a small nose piece or tie bar rather than a handle, web, or tie bar. The finished product resembles a figure eight or a pair of glasses, hence the name.
